Why a Relaunch Is More Than Just a Design Change

A relaunch in Shopify brings many advantages: new structure, better UX, new content. But from a technical perspective, a relaunch is above all one thing: a challenge for your visibility in search engines.

Because when URLs change—and they almost always do with Shopify—you need a clean redirect concept. Otherwise, you risk:

Ranking losses

404 error pages

Lost backlinks

Visibility drops in Google

In this post, I’ll show you why redirects are especially critical with Shopify and which typical mistakes you should avoid.

Why Redirects Are Especially Sensitive in Shopify

Shopify is not designed to flexibly manage complex URL structures. Especially not when:

You’re moving from an old domain to a new one

Your shop runs on multiple subdomains or languages

The “handles” change due to a relaunch

Content is archived or newly combined

Without a functioning redirect concept, this leads to pages that can’t be found, unnecessary crawl budget usage, and poor user experience.

Typical SEO Mistakes During a Relaunch

Mistake Impact No or incomplete 301 redirects Rankings are lost Old content not considered in the new structure Users land on 404 pages Sitemap is not updated Google crawls outdated URLs Language variants are not redirected correctly Potential duplicate content

These problems add up—especially for international shops with multiple slugs and subdomains.

Why Manual Redirects Aren’t Enough

Many work with Excel lists or Shopify apps that allow simple redirects. The problem: These solutions are often incomplete, not scalable, and hard to control.

A typical scenario:

You have 5 language versions of your shop

The old structure can’t be transferred 1:1

Not all pages from the sitemap were considered

Mapping is done manually, partly with copy & paste

Result: Gaps, errors, lost traffic.

What Helps Instead: Automated Redirect Mapping

I’ve developed a toolset that addresses exactly this—automated, scalable, and reliable. It combines:

Live data from the XML sitemap

Exports from Shopify (e.g., products, pages, blogs)

Intelligent mapping with slugs and language variants

Redirect generation in Matrixify-compatible format

In the next post, I’ll show you exactly how this works with Python—step by step.

Conclusion

A Shopify relaunch is not trivial. If you don’t want to sacrifice visibility, you need a professional redirect concept. And today, this can be very well automated.
