B2B SEO for industry and mechanical engineering
Products that need explaining, long decision cycles, technical content and internal teams who have to implement everything. B2B SEO rarely fails for lack of ideas. It fails because the right measures do not make it through the organization.
I work with manufacturers, industrial companies and mechanical engineering firms whose knowledge sits deep inside datasheets and whose website is used by several countries at once.
Does this sound familiar?
I see these four points again and again in industrial and B2B projects, regardless of size or sector:
Your best knowledge is locked in PDFs
Datasheets, standards and application examples are available as downloads. That is convenient for customers, hard for Google to use and often invisible to AI systems. The very content that sets you apart from competitors never shows up in search.
Implementation is stuck with IT
The analysis exists, so does the action list. It has just been sitting in the ticket backlog for months. Without clear prioritization and without a reason why this particular change comes first, nothing moves.
Headquarters decides, you carry the numbers
Template, domain strategy and tooling come from the group. The results are owned locally. What is missing is a line of argument that actually gets local requirements approved centrally.
Three tools, three truths
Every SEO tool reports a different list of issues. Some are long since fixed, others are measurement errors from the crawler. Your team works through tickets that change nothing while the real blockers stay untouched.
Why tools alone are not enough
In almost every larger project several analysis tools run in parallel. The result is contradictory findings: one tool reports missing headings that are visibly present on the page. Another marks load time issues as resolved while measurement still shows clear delays in rendering.
Without checking against the real page, this creates activity instead of impact. I validate findings before they become tasks, filter out false alarms and justify the remaining points well enough to earn a priority in the backlog.
Who I work for
The starting point is similar whether you supply the construction industry, build machines or manufacture components: products that need explaining, a limited pool of searchers and an offering that cannot be summed up in two sentences.
Mechanical and plant engineering
Small search volumes, but very specific enquiries. Someone searching for a process, a performance class or an application is already planning a project. SEO in mechanical engineering pays off through precision, not reach.
Manufacturers and suppliers
Product data, standards and certificates are the real competitive advantage. If they only exist as downloads, Google can barely use them and AI systems do not find them at all.
Internationally structured companies
Several country and language versions on one domain, often with a central template. Here the technical markup decides which country page gets served in the first place.
Companies with an internal digital team
You have capacity, but too many open items and no reliable order. I prioritize and justify, your team implements.
Technical priorities in B2B projects
Visibility in AI answers
AI crawlers generally do not execute JavaScript. If content is only assembled in the browser, it does not exist for these systems. Server-side rendering is therefore no longer just a performance question but a precondition for appearing in AI answers at all.
Structured data as a reading aid
Schema markup tells search engines and AI systems what is on a page. In many industrial projects it is missing entirely while competitors use it widely. It is usually the first technical measure with a clear effect.
Country versions and hreflang
With several language and country versions, the markup decides which one gets served. Missing or one-sided references mean the wrong country page ranks, or versions push each other out.
Sitemap and indexing hygiene
Redirected and outdated URLs in the sitemap, orphan pages with no internal links, content that never makes it into the index. Unspectacular, but this is exactly where large websites lose a large share of their potential.
How I work with internal teams
Taking stock instead of starting over
Existing audits, tool access and ongoing work go on the table first. Work already done gets assessed, not repeated.
Validate the findings
Every reported issue is checked against the real page. Anything that turns out to be a measurement error is dropped before it ties up capacity.
Prioritize and justify
The cleaned-up list becomes a sequence ordered by impact and effort, each with a justification that also holds up outside the SEO team.
Guide implementation and prove the effect
I guide the implementation technically and then demonstrate the effect in the numbers. That makes the next measure easier to get approved.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO even worth it for B2B products that need explaining?
Yes, but not through reach. Search volumes are small and search intent is very specific. Someone looking for a standard, a technical value or an application is in the middle of a project. A single contact from that group can be worth more than thousands of visitors on a general guide article.
We have an internal digital team. What do you do then?
I do not replace the team, I prioritize for it. In practice there are usually more open SEO tickets than capacity. My job is to determine which five of them actually move the needle, to phrase the requirements so they can be implemented, and to demonstrate the effect afterwards.
Our technical data only exists as PDFs. Is that a problem?
Usually yes. PDFs do get indexed, but they rank worse than HTML pages, cannot be linked internally in a clean way and are much harder for AI systems to use. Technical values, standards and applications belong on the page as HTML, with the PDF remaining available as a download.
We are part of a corporate group and can barely change the website. Does this still work?
That is the normal case, not the exception. We separate what can be decided locally from what headquarters has to approve. The second part needs a solid case backed by numbers. That is exactly what I provide, so the request lands internally as a business case rather than an opinion.
Where do you stand right now?
In a first call we look at your website, the analyses you already have and your internal constraints. By the end you know which three points make the biggest difference for you, regardless of whether we work together.
