Shopify SEO agency or freelancer: who offers what?

Many Shopify agencies come from development: theme, apps, checkout. Search engine optimization is often handled on the side there. Specialized SEO agencies have a team for it, but include sales and project management in their prices. As a freelancer, I focus on visibility and revenue from organic search and work together with your agency, which implements the theme. You get a fixed contact person who has supported online shops for years.

How Shopify SEO works with me

  1. Audit: Search Console, crawl, collections, product pages and competition. Plus a potential analysis of what better rankings are worth in euros.
  2. Plan: a prioritized list by effort and impact that your team understands.
  3. Implementation: On-page work on collections, product pages and technology, off-page work through mentions, reviews and link building. Your team, your agency or I implement.
  4. Measurement: the same metrics every month, so you see what works.

I work with Google Search Console, Google Analytics, SISTRIX, Visibly AI, Matrixify and my own Python scripts.

What does Shopify offer for SEO, and where are the limits?

Shopify takes a lot of technology off your plate: hosting, SSL, an automatic XML sitemap and canonical tags come built in. In return, some things are fixed that you can design freely with Shopware or WooCommerce.

URL structure

The prefixes /collections/, /products/ and /pages/ are fixed. Only the handles behind them can be changed.

Duplicate content

Many themes link products via the collection path (/collections/x/products/y). The canonical tag does point to /products/y, but internal links and crawl budget flow into the variants. The links in the theme belong on the canonical URL.

robots.txt

With the file robots.txt.liquid, filter and search URLs can be blocked selectively. This saves crawl budget on large product ranges.

Liquid and theme

Headings, structured data and meta output live in the Liquid code. Logos, banners or section titles are often output as H1, and this cannot be selected in the customizer. It only shows up in a crawl and is usually quick to fix in the code.

Core Web Vitals and loading speed

Every app brings its own scripts. Unused apps and heavy sliders slow down page speed, especially on smartphones.

Collections as ranking pages

In Shopify shops, collections are what mostly rank. That is why I almost always start there. Every collection that stays in the index gets a search intent, its own title, a meta description, an intro text and matching internal links. Collections by occasion or target group, such as gifts up to a certain price, capture searches that a plain product category never reaches.

Hundreds of collections without a plan

A fashion shop came to the intro call with around 300 automatic collections and the question of how far to merge them. The answer comes from the search data: what is searched for stays in the index, the rest serves only for navigation.

Filter pages instead of their own collections

Filters create thousands of pages that look almost the same. Search-relevant combinations belong in their own collection. In a beauty shop, this added 20 to 30 high-conversion collections that do not all need to be in the main menu.

Sold-out products and seasonal collections

A clear rule has proven itself: only products that do not come back disappear from the collections, and an overview records which collection is indexed and which is not.

Product pages that sell and rank

The product page decides the purchase. First I check which term customers really search for, and then I build the page to a fixed structure: title and meta description with a benefit, a description that answers questions, reviews and structured data for product, price and availability. For a sports brand, I derived FAQs directly from real customer reviews, so that the answers match the language of the buyers.

Content marketing for Shopify shops

Guides, buying advice and comparisons reach customers before they search for a product. What matters is that every article links to the matching collection. At PURELEI, targeted blog content brought in around €1.2 million in revenue, of which €226,000 came through organic Google search.

Markets, languages and Shopify Plus

Shopify Markets creates language and country versions. Translated handles, hreflang and redirects per market need a plan, otherwise the wrong versions rank in the wrong country. The same SEO basics apply to Shopify Plus, plus there are often several markets or separate shops per country.

Shopify SEO apps: what they can do and what they cannot

SEO apps help with legwork: alt texts, meta data in bulk, structured data. They do not replace a strategy. Which collections should exist, which pages belong in the index and which content is missing is not decided by any app. I keep the number of apps small and prefer to implement large changes via spreadsheet and Matrixify. That way even thousands of changes stay controllable.

Shopify shops in ChatGPT and AI search

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI now recommend products and online shops directly. They draw on product data, structured data, reviews and mentions on other sites. For PURELEI, €25,000 in revenue came through ChatGPT in 12 months. I measure the visibility of your shop in AI answers with Visibly AI and build it up in a targeted way.

How to recognize good Shopify SEO: metrics in reporting

  • Organic clicks and revenue per collection, not just for the homepage
  • Number of indexed pages compared to the pages that belong in the index
  • Rankings of the most important collections and product pages
  • Core Web Vitals on smartphones
  • Mentions of the shop in AI answers

If these numbers are missing from your report, ask for them. Good reporting also shows what did not work. How to recognize reputable providers →

Frequently asked questions about Shopify SEO

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, Shopify is a solid foundation: fast hosting, clean canonicals and sitemaps come built in. The limits lie in the fixed URL prefixes, in filter pages and in duplicate product URLs via collection paths. This can be solved if you plan for it from the start.

My Shopify shop is barely found. What exactly do you do?

First, I check in Search Console whether the important pages are in the index at all and what they get impressions for. Then come the collections with the greatest demand, followed by product pages and content. You usually see the first levers right after the audit.

Can I change the URL structure in Shopify?

Shopify fixes the prefixes /collections/, /products/ and /pages/. You can change the handles behind them. Shopify offers to create a 301 redirect automatically when you do. With many changes at once, a redirect plan in a spreadsheet is worthwhile, for example with Matrixify.

Should I let filter pages be indexed?

Mostly not. Filter URLs create thousands of nearly identical pages. It is better to set up combinations with real search demand as their own collection, with their own title and text. The remaining filters stay usable for customers and out of the index.

My shop is new. Do I need SEO right away?

A clean collection structure pays off before launch, because later rebuilds cost redirects and time. Ongoing support pays off as soon as there is enough product range and demand. For the start, a PowerSession with a clear list is often enough.

Can a small online shop afford Shopify SEO?

Yes. A PowerSession for €375 or an audit from €2,500 delivers a list that you can implement yourself. Ongoing support pays off if organic search should become a fixed revenue channel.

What does Shopify SEO cost?

A Shopify SEO audit including potential analysis starts from €2,500 one-off. Ongoing consulting where your team implements starts from €1,500 per month. With implementation by me, from €3,000 per month. A migration to Shopify starts from €2,500.

Do you work with our Shopify agency?

Yes, that is the most common case. I deliver analysis, priorities and concrete specifications for theme, collections and content. Your agency or your team implements, and I review the result before it goes live.

How quickly will I see results?

Technical fixes often take effect after a few weeks, once Google has recrawled. New collections and content usually take three to six months. For PURELEI, visibility doubled in 8 months.
